GERALD CHARLES x IGOR MITORAJ: LUCI DI NARA
For the first time in its history, Gerald Charles commits to contemporary art with a unique piece for TimeForArt, in support of Swiss Institute
Gerald Charles unveils the Maestro GC39 Mitoraj, a unique Grand Maestro Jumping Hour and the Maison's first act of philanthropy dedicated to the arts. It is created for TimeForArt, the world's first benefit watch auction devoted entirely to contemporary art, founded by New York's Swiss Institute. Proceeds support the Institute's exhibitions, artist residencies and educational programs, guided by a simple idea: artists supporting artists.
Developed with Atelier Mitoraj and Galleria d'Arte Contini, the project is a genuine dialogue between disciplines and a natural extension of the sculptural instinct Gérald Charles Genta instilled in the Maison from its founding.
A Sculptural Language
Igor Mitoraj created one of the most recognizable sculptural languages of the last century: classical Greco-Roman beauty, disrupted by fragmentation and incomplete forms that speak to human fragility and our relationship with time. Luci di Nara embodies this, a serene classical face coexisting with its own incompleteness. Fittingly, this June the Museo Mitoraj opened in Pietrasanta, the Tuscan city where the artist lived and worked for decades.
Translation, Not ReproductionRather than reproducing Luci di Nara as an image, Gerald Charles set out to translate its physical presence into the architecture of a mechanical watch. The Jumping Hour proved ideal: with no hour hand, the dial remains open, while the asymmetrically placed guichet at the top frees the lower dial for the sculpture.
The face is a three-dimensional miniature sculpture in brass, finished in warm 4N PVD and set against a guilloché dial. Polished 4N cabochon indexes and the Maestro's signature railway minute track preserve the collection's codes, while the Grand Maestro case, with sculpted lines inspired by Baroque architecture and Francesco Borromini, offers a natural home for Mitoraj's work.
Serious Horology Beneath
The watch is powered by the automatic in-house Calibre GCA3900: 265 components, 38 jewels, 4 Hz and approximately 50 hours of power reserve. For sixty minutes, the mechanism accumulates the energy needed to advance the hour disc in a single, near-instantaneous jump.
The 42 × 42 mm case in polished Grade 5 titanium is 11 mm thick, water resistant to 100 metres. The closed case back is engraved with Luci di Nara after Igor Mitoraj, the artist's signature, the TimeForArt identity, an acknowledgement of Atelier Mitoraj and Galleria d'Arte Contini, and the designation PIÈCE UNIQUE.
Made Once
The aim was never simply to place art on a watch, but to let artwork and watchmaking become one.
"True emotions are felt only once, each one always different from the other," said Igor Mitoraj. A thought that gives the GC39 Mitoraj its deepest meaning: made once, and never again.
The Maestro GC39 Mitoraj will be offered at the third edition of TimeForArt, the largest to date with 26 participating brands, at Phillips New York on December 5, 2026.
